All Guilds Meeting - January 2013

Portrait de Lyrositor

Another month, another All Guilds Meeting. This time, Doobes was on a well-deserved vacation, so Lyrositor took over moderating duties for this month. As usual, both cleansed and raw logs are available for your viewing pleasures, as well as the customary summary of the event:

Christian Walther

Christian was our first speaker and summed up the recent series of events concerning the licensing problems with Bink, which interrupted the normal flow of development and testing. To be concise, a portion of Uru's code was discovered by RAD Game Tools (makers of the Bink video codec) to contain copyrighted code from their Software Development Kit (SDK). They demanded that the code be removed from all CWE repositories, an arduous task to say the least. Developers promptly began the process of rewriting repository history to remove these files. Most of the work has been acheived by now, fortunately, and only a few tasks remain, and H'uru has already resumed its normal development pace.

For more information on the actual problem, visit this news post.

Special thanks to Christian Walther for coordinating the collaborative history rewriting effort!

Mac came on next to talk about an issue that was recently discovered by a user. It would seem that NVDIA has recently updated their PhysX software. As such, it is possible that some users may get their installation of PhysX updated automatically, following which most MO:UL shards will stop working, since the new versions of PhysX do not include the old drivers needed for MO:UL. You'll know if this happens to you if you get an error message about PhysX not being installed or too old. The solution to this problem is detailed in this post.

Mac also informed us that Tor'i of Cyan has been looking into the frequent server crashes and will meet up with other Cyan employees to try to understand (and fix, hopefully!) the problem.

We would like to thank Mac too for his assistant in communicating with Cyan on this subject, notifying them whenever the server went down.

Guild of Writers

Lyrositor was next to briefly present the latest updates to the Guild of Writers' Gehn Shard, which include restored pellet scoring functionality, speed improvements, a fix to lock KI chat scrolling, and more! Go check it out if you haven't already. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to include Christian's winning stained glass contest entry in the last two updates, so it'll probably be for another time.

Guild of Messengers

Last to present was the Guild of Messengers; Lyrositor announced their latest member, angelmyst, who will be assisting with Uru2U's production, which sadly hasn't seen much progress since the last AGM. Lyrositor and Nev'yn reminded everyone that their help was sorely needed to help continue the series. Musica then announced a series of celebrations for the upcoming 3rd anniversary of MO:ULa, probably both in the Cavern and in Second Life. Nev'yn also informed us that he would have less time to do some Cavern Crying.

That's it for this month! December's CAVCON was at 4.1, which means that the costs were covered, with a slight 10% excess that went into the reserve fund. See you in February!
